Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for art from the aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as an avenue for action. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially aware and taught her to say something through the arts. Although DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents, she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to direct a movie about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish at the home that belonged to a member of jury. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
